We are a family owned general contracting company located in beautiful Beaufort, South Carolina.

About Us

In 1946, shortly after the close of World War II, Dorothy and Fred Mitchell returned home from military life to the coastal town of Beaufort, SC. They joined the other four Mitchell brothers there and began building their family contracting business. The company opened its doors as Beaufort Supply Company, a small lumber and building supply business. This business grew, and the family shortly thereafter started their general contracting company, now known as Mitchell Brothers, Inc. The company has been nurtured and improved by three generations of family members, and we are now celebrating over 70 years as a family-owned general contracting business based in Beaufort, SC.

Today, Mitchell Brothers continues to focus on its core strength as an experienced and award-winning military general contracting company, and on the other core areas of commercial and health care construction. Mitchell Brothers has successfully completed hundreds of projects for multiple military installations and others in and out of Beaufort, SC and the surrounding areas. Our projects include work for the United States Navy, Parris Island Facilities Maintenance, Trane Global, county governments and school districts, universities, and private companies, among others. We have worked on both new construction and renovation/repair projects under all types of contracts. Geographically, Mitchell Brothers has substantial work experience at MCRD Parris Island, MCAS Beaufort, and the Naval Hospital Beaufort, along with other geographic areas including Beaufort/Jasper Counties, Charleston, SC and Albany, GA. Historically, our projects have ranged from as small as $2,500 to as large as $20,000,000. Multiple Award IDIQ, design/build, design-bid-build, large scale renovations, CM at risk, and maintenance contracts are all areas in which Mitchell Brothers has excelled over multiple years. We are proud of the fact that all our work is completed on time, within budget, and with outstanding evaluations.

Mitchell Brothers is a Small Business and SBA certified HUBZone Small Business. We also are heavily invested in our community and strive to positively contribute to our area and the lives of our neighbors and friends. Members of our team currently serve on the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce Military Enhancement Committee, Beaufort County Zoning Board of Appeals, Beaufort County Storm Water Management Board, and Lady’s Island Community Preservation Committee, among others. We sponsor many community events including Military Appreciation Day, and participate in many organizations such as The United Way, Beaufort Memorial Hospital, area churches, schools, and arts organizations.

Supporting and helping to enhance our local economy is important to us. We buy our materials from local suppliers and vendors and use local subcontractors whenever practicable. We also employ approximately 40 personnel on average, primarily from Beaufort and Hampton counties. Over 75% of our workforce has been employed by MBI for over five years, which in the construction industry says a lot about the relationship we continue to build with our loyal workforce. We believe that education is extremely important for our workforce and provide pay for education programs and technical degrees for our employees who wish to further their knowledge of our industry, along with other competitive benefits.

Moving forward into the future, Mitchell Brothers will continue to leverage and improve upon its strengths and experience. These include our understanding of the contractor’s unique role and proven approach to accomplishing varied scopes of work for general construction projects. Mitchell Brother’s management approach has been, is, and always will be a partnering approach – namely, that a partnership is formed upon award of a contract with the customer, contractor, and other parties involved, including subcontractors and any designer of record. By, among other things, maintaining onsite office locations, high performing and ample management and workforce, proactive scheduling practices, communication with all involved parties, and continued strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers and others, Mitchell Brothers is positioned to perform in all aspects of the projects it undertakes. Contracts with quick response times, multiple tasks performing simultaneously, task orders with varied scopes of work, and projects with short durations with challenging schedule requirements are all typical of contracts that Mitchell Brothers has successfully completed and looks forward to undertaking.

Mitchell Brothers has 70 years’ worth of experience on both general and specialized scopes of work, including new construction, renovation/repair, and maintenance. In its role as general contractor, Mitchell Brothers has performed projects and task orders with many different specialized scopes and sizes. Our staff carefully analyzes each task order and selects the right subcontractors for each specialized scope of work. Our experience has included, for example, large geothermal well projects, fuel piping for aircraft, recruit training pool renovations, large scale electrical projects, concrete ditch drainage for runways, and hundreds more general and specialized scopes. Mitchell Brothers is an experienced leader not only on traditional design-bid-build projects but also on design/build projects.

As prime contractor, Mitchell Brothers has a 70-year history of working with the US Navy and Marine Corps aboard their military installations, in addition to our commercial and health care customers. It is our partnering philosophy, along with sound management practices and the delivery of a quality project, within budget and on time, that has allowed us to continue our contracting association with the government and others for over 70 years, and with which we look to the next 70 years. We look forward to the opportunity to continue to build existing and new relationships on future projects.

Our Services

Throughout Mitchell Brothers’ 70 years in business we have been able to produce on projects of various sizes and have successfully utilized many different delivery methods. We have effectively tackled projects as small as $2,500 and as large as $20,000,000 through a multitude of methods. As a General Contractor it is important to be able to help customers as they see fit for a variety of circumstances. This can either be through Design Bid Build or Design Build depending on the individual needs of the client. In addition, Mitchell Brothers has been able to develop crews that can work on scopes that are typically subcontracted out by other general contractors. This has allowed us to pursue certain specialty projects and maintenance work that we would not be qualified to perform without our various in-house abilities. Please see our various services below.

This is how many of our projects are procured. Design Bid Build projects are typically 100% designed with specifications, and are competitively bid to multiple General Contractors. In all of our MACC(Multiple Award Construction Contract) programs through the federal government, each project is bid through this manner with a few pre-approved firms. Many times these are awarded to the low bidder, but sometimes can be through “best value” which enables the customer to combine not only price but specific technical items that may rank one company ahead of another. Mitchell Brothers has a full estimating team that allows us to estimate these jobs in a very detailed manner and offer very competitive pricing. We also lean heavily on our select group of subcontractors and suppliers that we know can not only perform to our standards, but also give fair pricing.

Mitchell Brothers also has extensive experience through the Design/Build method of contract delivery. This allows us to partner with an Architect/Engineer and work directly with the customer as the project is designed from the ground up. This allows the contractor to be involved from day one of project development, which helps ensure the project hits the overall budget. Value Engineering between the contractor, architect, and customer often allows the price of the overall project to be less. Mitchell Brothers has multiple strong relationship with architect and engineering firms in the lowcountry, as well as larger regional firms around the Southeast.

One service Mitchell Brothers is very proud of is our mechanical division. Over the last 30 years we have created a portion of our company that can tackle mechanical project from residential to very large commercial and industrial scoped schedules of work. We self-perform 100% of the mechanical portions within our GC work. In addition, we bid on straight mechanical projects. Our crews are able, but not limited in their ability to, set equipment, run pipe of all sizes, build/hang ductwork, and insulate all mechanical systems, We have very strong relationships with all the major equipment suppliers, as well as companies that sell pipe, insulation, and metal. Test and Balance, DDC Controls, and Commissioning are also third party subs in which we have enjoyed long lasting relationships, allowing us to get top notch service. Mitchell Brothers holds an Unlimited Mechanical license through SC LLR allowing us to bid on any size mechanical project.

As Mitchell Brothers Inc. has evolved and diversified our capabilities over the years, we have been called upon on several occasions to perform various maintenance projects on the bases here in Beaufort as well as at Beaufort Memorial Hospital and the Technical College of the Lowcountry. At times, maintenance issues have arisen that were beyond the capacity of the Base Facilities crews that would typically handle these projects. We have been happy to step in and work with both the state and federal governments to resolve these issues. These maintenance scopes of work have included everything from mechanical work to cosmetic issues that have arisen in several commercial and light industrial facilities around the area. We have enjoyed these projects and moving forward we hope to continue and expand this section of our work load.

Mitchell Brothers has recently become a dealer for American Buildings Company for the Beaufort, S.C area. This allows us to be purchase and install custom or specifically designed Pre-Engineered metal buildings. With the company’s representative located in Beaufort, we are lucky to have her nearby to be able to meet with us and value engineer specific projects for our clients. Located in Eufaula, Alabama, American is part of the Nucor Corporation. They have been leading the industry in technology, design flexibility, quality, and value for more than half a century. American Buildings is one of the largest and most experienced manufacturers of custom engineered steel buildings systems in the world. There buildings have been used, but are not limited to, such facilities as churches, recreation buildings, self-storage, airport hangars, commercial/retail, warehouse/distribution, gymnasium, education, and auto dealerships.
